The driver of a stolen vehicle believed to have been used in a commercial break-in died after the vehicle rolled into a ditch on Feb. 25, said police.

Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 700 block of Cavalier Driver just after 11 p.m. The vehicle was believed to have been used in a break and enter in the 800 block a short time earlier, said police.

Officers said the vehicle was later spotted in the Portage Avenue and Moray Street area.

The driver refused to stop and fled south on Moray, said police.

Officers started pursuing it but aborted that in the area of William Clement Parkway and Grant Avenue.

The police helicopter was dispatched, tracking the vehicle to the Roblin Boulevard area and then south on Wescana, where the vehicle rolled into the ditch.

One passenger fled and was caught a short distance away.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital in critical condition and later died from injuries.

Police said officers later learned the vehicle had been stolen earlier in the evening before the break and enter.

The owner of a comic book shop on Cavalier Drive said the suspects took about $480 worth of action figures and cash.

Marc Girard witnessed the crash. He said the outcome could have been worse if it happened in the day time.

“(He) could have hit a little kid on the road if it was during the day," said Girard.
