Winter weather greeted the start of Festival du Voyageur with a blast of frigid temperatures.

On the same day Festival kicks off its 47th season, Winnipeggers woke up to an extreme cold warning. Enrvironment Canada said an arctic ridge of high pressure is the cause for concern, and warned those not dressed for the conditions are at risk for frostbite and hypothermia.

But no need to worry, hearty voyageaurs: Festival won't be bowing down to the cold.

For opening night Friday, a torch light walk will be presented by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

At 6:30 p.m., hundreds of candles and torch lights will take people from the main entrance of the CMHR to the Voyageur Park for opening celebrations.

Those get underway at 7:30 p.m. and include a traditional friendship dance and fireworks.

Voyageur Park will be open from 5 p.m. until midnight Friday. Festival du Voyageur runs everyday until Feb. 21.

New this year, a  variety of themed activities will take place in the Université de Saint-Boniface Portage Tent. Favourites such as snow sculpting, workshops, demonstrations, cultural exhibits and muscial concerts will also return to this year's event.
