WINNIPEG - Canada's Finance minister says he still has confidence in Statistics Canada after the agency made a huge error in its latest jobs report.
Last week, StatsCan reported the economy only gained 200 jobs in July when the figure was actually 42,000.
Finance Minister Joe Oliver called the error -- quote -- "regrettable" after a speech in Winnipeg today.
But Oliver says Statistics Canada pinpointed the mistake quickly and corrected it.
He says the agency has long history of competence and he's not concerned this mistake will tarnish its reputation.
Oliver says the mistake was as a result of human error and has nothing to do with any government cutbacks.
Statistics Canada blamed the error on an overhaul of its Labour Force Survey, an exercise it undertakes every 10 years.
