A family in the RM of West St. Paul said they have suffered nearly $250,000 in damages to their property after a fire burnt down a garage and three vehicles.

Around 4 p.m. flames broke out from the garage of the home on Grassmere Drive.

The homeowner, who asked not to be named, said the fire started as he was working on cars inside garage.

West St. Paul Deputy Fire Chief Mike Azaransky said crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to other structures on the property, including the family’s home.

“On arrival we protected all the surroundings, it was a defensive attack to extinguish the fire and make sure everyone else was safe,” Azaransky said.

“The first thing we did was save anything around it, and all of the existing structures were watered down.”

According the Azaransky, crews also had to account for two propane tanks inside the garage, which both exploded causing large fire balls.

Azaransky said six fire trucks responded to the fire.

The official cause of the fire is under investigation.
