An overnight fire caused an estimated $50,000 worth of damage to a church in Winnipeg’s West End.

The fire broke out just after 10:30 Wednesday night at the West End Commons Church near St. Matthews Avenue and McGee Street.

Fire officials said it started in a metal trash container and caused damage to some windows and the exterior of the church.

A volunteer at the church said the building had been undergoing extensive renovations for more than two years.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There were no injuries.
