Six people made it out safely after a house caught fire late Tuesday evening on Alexander Avenue in Winnipeg's West Alexander area. Firefighters also managed to rescue a number of kittens.

Fire crews responded to the call just after 9 p.m.

Marlene Pagee, who lives next door, said the fire spread quickly.

“Within five minutes the house was engulfed in flames,” she said.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but police said the blaze caused $200,000 in damage.
