Staff working at the first-ever birth centre in Winnipeg have delivered their first baby.

Jack Stephen Chilufya was born at the facility on St. Mary's Road around 7:00 p.m. Saturday to parents Sara Heinrichs and Anthony Chilufya.

Heinrichs was the first woman to give birth at the new centre which officially opened in October. The facility has four large private birthing rooms, examination offices and consultation areas.

The mother said she was happy with her decision to give birth to her first child at the centre.

"It just felt more comfortable for me than the hustle and bustle of a hospital," she said. "I thought that would be overwhelming for me. So yeah, it turned out to be the best thing for me, I think."

Eight midwives are on staff but expectant mothers with other midwives can also use the centre. There is also an area for emergency vehicles to transport women to hospital in case of complications.
