Five people face aggravated assault charges after a man was seriously beaten on Main Street when he went outside to have a cigarette.

On Feb. 28, the 42-year-old victim left a hotel in the 600 block of Main Street along with a group of people. While they were outside, the man was confronted and punched and kicked to the ground, police said in a news release.

The man was robbed of cash and cigarettes and the suspects fled, police said. The victim encountered the group a second time a short distance away in the area of Main Street and Henry Avenue and again he was assaulted, causing serious injuries. The suspects fled again, police said.

A motorist spotted the victim and police were called. The victim is in critical condition.
