Business owners in Whiteshell Provincial Park said their doors will be open over the July long weekend despite record rainfall and flooding.

The Falcon Lake and West Hawk Lake Chamber of Commerce said all resorts and hotels have worked hard to repair their grounds and have resumed business as usual.

Road closures remain in effect in the area and many trails have been closed, including the popular Caddy Lake tunnel canoe route.

The road closures are bad news for business owners in Rennie, located just east of the Whiteshell. Road closures mean no one can access the park from Rennie. It also means no one in the park can get to Rennie.

Rennie resident Roisin Love said it is unfortunate for the hotel and restaurant in town. She said people living in, or visiting, central Whiteshell also cannot get to Rennie to get their mail, or buy beer, because of the road closure on Highway 307.

The owners of Inverness Falls resort said visitors can still access central Whiteshell by driving through Seven Sisters.

Love said she is concerned people in the area will have to wait longer for emergency services due to the road closures.

Despite major flooding, marinas at Faloma, Falcon Lake and West Hawk Lake will also be opened for business.

The chamber said the size of the beach at West Hawk has been reduced due to flooding, but continues to grow as the water recedes.

Fireworks and a boat parade will go ahead at Falcon Lake, the chamber said.
