Flooding from an ice jam prompted officials to issue an evacuation order in Petersfield early Wednesday morning, forcing 35 people from their homes.

Around 4 a.m. in the area of Jenny Drive, the evacuation order went into place as flood water from Netley Creek ran over the road, said St. Andrews emergency coordinator Darcy Hardman.

Five families were put up in hotels, while most others stayed with relatives and friends.

Four properties needed pumps to remove the water. CTV News was told the damage was not significant.

Officials said the ice jam later cleared the area.

Residents were slated to be allowed to return home Wednesday afternoon.

The area has been prone to flooding in previous years.

“The residents - a lot of times at this time of year - they already have their bags packed. We assist them with getting a location to stay,” said Hardman.
