Condolences continue to pour in for the family of a former Winnipeg student who was killed in a mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school Friday.

Six-year-old Ana Marquez-Greene was killed in one of the worst school massacres in American history. Twenty children and six adults were killed in the attacks. The gunman, Adam Lanza, killed his mother before the shooting and then killed himself – bringing the death toll to 28.

Now, a Winnipeg community is in mourning for a girl who lived half of her short life in Winnipeg.

Family friend Charlene Diehl remembered Ana as “a very sharp, intelligent, sweet, curious girl.”

Three years ago, the Greene family moved to Winnipeg so Ana’s father could teach at the University of Manitoba’s faculty of music.

Ana’s father, Jimmy Greene, is a musician and professor and who was well-known in the Winnipeg jazz community.

“Their lives revolved around their family and the children’s activities,” said Edmund Dawe, the dean of the faculty of music at the U of M.

“(Ana) was his little princess,” said Diehl.

The family relocated back to their home state in Connecticut in July. Just months later, the grade-one student was shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newton, Conn. on Friday. Her brother Isaiah was in Grade 3 at the school and wasn’t hurt in the attacks.

Both Ana and Isaiah attended Linden Christian School in Winnipeg before they moved.

The principal of Linden Christian School, Rob Charach, released a statement Friday, saying, “As a community let's uphold James, Nelba and their son Isaiah, as well as the many individuals impacted by this tragedy, in prayer.”

The Whyte Ridge Baptist Church, where the Greene family were members, held a vigil Friday night.

Diehl said both Jimmy and his wife Nelba were devoted to their family and community.

“Our hearts are breaking for them, and none of us can do the one thing everybody wants to do -- just back up the clock and put that child safely in her parents' arms,” said Diehl.

A musical dedication and vigil will be held at U of M Eva Claire Hall Tuesday evening in Ana's honour.
