A no kill cat shelter in Winnipeg has put out an emergency call for foster spaces ahead of its closure this week.

Craig Street Cats adoption centre, located at 489 Madison Street, will shut its doors April 30, leaving nearly 200 cats without a place to go.

"Our lease expires on Thursday, and our new adoption centre is not ready for the cats. We can't move them in until we install an air makeup unit, and we have not been able to raise enough money to pay for one,” said Lynne Scott, executive director for Craig Street Cats, in a news release.

Scott said the group is short $30,000 of its minimum fundraising target of $78,000. Until then, cats will have to be housed in private homes, and all the programs run through the adoption centre will be closed.

The organization needs to find qualified foster placements for 190 cats before Thursday.

Scott had no estimate for how long it might take to open the new centre.
