Slippery conditions from Sunday's freezing rain contributed to MPI's busiest Monday in a month.

“By the end of the day we'll surpass over a thousand collision claims. Many of those are related to Sunday’s icy roads,” said Brian Smiley from MPI on Monday.

The slippery slope continued when ice on hydro lines left around 4,000 homes in the dark Monday morning.

Power outages extended from Crestview to Headingley.

And with freezing rain came hot demand for cold weather supplies.

"We had a difficult time looking out the (vehicle) window. Have to make sure we're stocking up on the windshield...de-icing materials,” said shopper Kathy Macfarlane.

Though sales of ice scrapers, windshield washer fluid and sidewalk salt increased, the director of Broadway Neighbourhood Centre was relieved to find that Canadian Tire still had plenty of stock.

Laurence Mulhall said some other businesses were sold out of sidewalk salt and he’d been going store to store searching for supplies.
