On Sunday, Environment Canada confirmed reports of a funnel cloud that happened Saturday afternoon.

Around 4:12 p.m. Saturday, a funnel cloud formed about 12 kilometres north of Russell, Manitoba, near Asessippi Provincial Park.

“It’s difficult from the pictures to tell if it touched down,” said Jason Knight, a meteorologist with Environment Canada. “It likely touched down for a few seconds. Very short lived.”

Knight went on to say that these funnel clouds are very common. The one that occurred Saturday, formed ahead of a low pressure system that was moving from Saskatchewan and was very weak.

There were no reports of any damage as the funnel cloud lasted about two minutes, said Knight.

“These funnel clouds are very short lived and tend to dissipate really quickly,” he said.

Knight said there were no reports of any other funnel clouds that day, so it didn’t appear to be dangerous. Nevertheless, he said “it’s always worth keeping an eye on the sky.”
