A funeral for an 11-year-old girl from Garden Hill First Nation takes place Thursday in the community.

Parts of Teresa Robinson's remains were discovered almost three weeks ago.

Since then, hundreds have rallied to help her family find all of her remains before her funeral.

In preparation for the funeral, friends and family gathered for the past two days at a wake service to support the girl’s family as they prepared for her funeral.

Inside the home, her grandparents and elders sat near Teresa's casket Wednesday, praying for strength and healing.

"She'll be missed so much. She was a loving and kind person," said Teresa’s aunt, Michelle Robinson.

Some of the girl's remains were found about a kilometre and a half from home, days after she left a birthday party at a house in early May.

Those were first found just metres from the house she left, in the opposite direction from her home.

Initially, it was thought an animal had mauled Teresa but RCMP have since declared her death a homicide.

While police continue their work, some in the community said they're scared not knowing how Teresa died or who killed her.

"It's hard to imagine what's been happening and what we're going to face," said Chief Arnold Flett of the Garden Hill First Nation.

In an effort to help the family find closure, Chief Flett said volunteers continued the search, hoping they find all of her remains before she's buried.

"We still got some small pieces that are missing that we want to recover. And once we put that to rest the community will be a lot happier," said searcher George Leonard from Manitoba Search & Rescue.

The chief doesn't know what they'll do if they find more of her remains after the funeral but for now said all they can do is try to come to terms with the tragedy.

"Even if we don't find all remains, we know that we did our best all we can do," said Chief Flett.

Many unanswered questions remain about Teresa's death, but Chief Flett said the funeral is all about remembering that shy little girl with a bright smile who touched so many lives.

The RCMP told CTV News on Thursday they have no update on the investigation.
