A housing co-op above the Gas Station Arts Centre moved one step closer to reality on Tuesday.

The organization behind the project made its proposal to the City Centre Community Committee. The plan includes a revitalization of the theatre space at River Avenue and Osborne Street, and a housing component upstairs.

The Gas Station Arts Centre wants co-op units that will be geared towards artists.

Performing Arts Lodge, or PAL, is inon the proposal, trying to develop apartments for aging Winnipeg artists.

"I think what a PAL Winnipeg would mean to aging artists is that they would have a place of both community, and of safety, and of dignity in their retirement," said Rea Kavanagh of PAL.

Kavanagh says her group will be fundraising and marketing the apartments as the proposal moves forward.

There are already PALlodges in Vancouver, Toronto, and Stratford.
