It's not meant to be fancy. NoFrills sells food without the frills of other grocery store chains.

Two Winnipeg areas are welcoming the discount retailer.

The North End lost its Extra Foods store on Main Street and the Spence neighborhoods lost its Extra Foods store on Notre Dame Avenue about two years ago.

The return of grocery stores has people excited.

“I can hardly wait,” said Patricia Kokan who has lived in the Luxton neighborhood for 23 years. “This means great changes for this community,” she added.

NoFrills is owned by Loblaw Companies Inc., the same company that ran Extra Foods.

“People are really going to enjoy having somewhere else to shop without having to take a bus or taxi to get there,” said Kokan.

The lack of nearby stores has also made it difficult for people and community groups access to healthy food.

“It's difficult finding good produce,” said Alyssa Seaman, who provides snacks for kids at the Luxton Community Centre.

She said the lack of affordable grocery stores in the area has changed how the centre feeds the kids.

Loblaw Companies Inc said NoFrills will succeed because they follow a lower operating cost model than Extra Foods.

It means there are less brands to choose from in the store and shoppers will be expected to bag their own groceries.

But even without the frills, the stores still carries all the basic food items found in a regular store.

The store located at 1445 Main Street opens March 27. The store located at 600 Notre Dame opens April 10.
