Hundreds of volunteers picked up their hammers and nails Monday morning for the start of Habitat for Humanity.

The weeklong event sees volunteers working together to build homes.

The goal is to build 25 homes in Winnipeg, with most of them going to local families. In total, volunteers aim to build 150 homes across the country.

Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, along with his wife, will stop by on Thursday and Friday to help with the work.

The overall goal of the project is to build affordable housing for low-income families.
