A Winnipeg man will serve three life sentences with no chance of parole for 75 years, after pleading guilty to the murders of three homeless men.

John Paul Ostamas was charged in the deaths of Donald Collins, Stony Bushie, and Myles Monias in April 2015.

According to the agreed statement of facts in the case, Ostamas was a stranger to each of the three murder victims.

Monias, the first victim, was sleeping in a downtown bus shelter on April 10 when Ostamas attacked him and then took off. Monias later died of his injuries.

The second victim, Bushie, was hit in the head with a two-by-four piece of lumber from a nearby construction trailer. Ostamas then dragged Bushie’s body behind a pile of plywood sheets.

Two hours after killing Bushie, Ostamas told police he took Collins to a parking lot, where he violently attacked him.

Ostamas pleaded guilty to killing all three men.

In court Monday, when given the chance to speak, Ostamas stood up and told the courtroom, "Who made me like this? The only reason I'm like this is because they violated my human rights, the police," in reference to a confrontation with police years ago that left a scar on his face.

"I’m sorry for the victims and for the community who had to come upon them. I was wrong,” Ostamas said. “I am willing to accept my consequences"

Franklin Bushie, the nephew of Bushie, said it was difficult to sit in the same courtroom as Ostamas.

“For me it was disgusting. I don’t understand how a person can do something like that,” Franklin said.

Bushie’s family is satisfied with the sentence.

"We'll be okay. We're happy. He gets to live in prison for the rest of his life and pass away in there," Franklin added.

Both the crown and defence asked for the three life sentences to be served consecutively.

According to the crown, it is the harshest sentence in Manitoba's history since the death penalty.
