The province has cancelled all burning permits, issued a fire ban, and will not issue fireworks permits for the northwest region of Manitoba due to hot and dry conditions and the risk of forest fires.

In a release, Manitoba Conservation says fires will only be allowed in approved pits in provincial parks and other locations between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.

The province says four new wildfires began Monday and blames lightning for each of them.

According to the province, fire crews have successfully contained those wildfires but anticipate more lightning strikes to start other fires in the coming days.

Residents forced from their homes by the Red Sucker Lake fire were expected to return home Tuesday.

According to the province, there are currently 84 active wildfires in Manitoba and there have been 264 in total so far this season.
