Fire crews were called to the scene of 402 Mandalay Drive for the report of smoke in a duplex around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

"There was significant damage to the kitchen cupboards and upwards to the attic space," said Wally Hergesheimer, the acting district chief with the Winnipeg fire department.

Occupants of home believed they saw sparks coming from electrical units.

"Crews made a great stop, we have cellulose insulation in the attic, which can be a fairly quick spreading material. But like I said crews arrived on scene quick(ly) and did a very good job," said Hergesheimer.

The fire was out in about 30 minutes.

Hergesheimer said all occupants self-evacuated and there were no injuries.

Fire officials said the total amount of damage was around $100,000 including about $80,000 in structural damage.

The fire is under investigation and there is no word yet on how it started.
