The man responsible for a number of major human rights movements in Winnipeg has died.

Wade Kojo Williams passed away Saturday.

Williams founded numerous human and minority rights organizations in the city including the Manitoba Coalition of Organizations Against Apartheid and racism, the Forum for the Awareness of the Minority Electorate, Students Against Apartheid and the Calypso Association of Winnipeg.

"There's no doubt about it: Wade is a pioneer of the amalgamation of black identity here," said friend Godwin Smith.

Williams was known for his work in the city’s Caribbean community and his passion for singing and song writing.

Williams spent years working with Winnipeg youth both as a school teacher, police officer and later a youth worker.

In addition, Williams coordinated Black History Month celebrations in Winnipeg for 26 years.
