Winnipeg police say an impaired driver was travelling at speeds as high as 70 kilometres per hour when two street sweepers were hit on Grant Avenue early Friday morning.

Const. Jason Michalyshen said the crash was a scary incident for the side sweepers but they were not hurt.

He said it is possible the hydraulic leak from one sweeper may have affected the Jeep's traction but that is not the main issue. Strobe lights were activated in the area, and other vehicles were slowing down to make their way around the sweepers.

Police said the second side sweeper was on the street to assist with repairs for the leaky sweeper. Michalyshen said it appears the second sweeper created a barrier in the crash, which may have helped prevent a worse situation.

A 25-year-old man faces charges impaired driving charges. He has upper and lower body injuries and is in stable condition.
