Prime Minister Stephen Harper has selected Janice Filmon as the new lieutenant-governor for Manitoba.

Filmon is currently a board member of the Winnipeg Airport Authority, the founding chair of Manitoba A.L.I.V.E., which instructs high school students on the skills for the voluntary sector and is the chair of the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

Her husband is Gary Filmon, former Manitoba premier.

“As a champion of health care and education, she has been an exemplary volunteer who has helped a wide range of Manitobans through her tireless efforts,” said Harper in a statement.

"The appointment was made in keeping with the non-partisan process to select Lieutenant Governors that was announced by the Prime Minister in November 2012," said Harper's office.

He also thanked Philip S. Lee for his service as lieutenant-governor of Manitoba since August 4, 2009.
