The Jets' winger Blake Wheeler is staying in hospital for 24 hours after taking a puck to the throat in Saturday's game against New Jersey.

Wheeler was hit in the throat in the second period of the Jets' 2-1 loss to the Devils.

He left the game and was taken to hospital for precautionary measures. Though tests on his throat and neck came back negative, Wheeler will be held at Health Sciences Centre for observation over the next 24 hours.

The Jets left for Ottawa Saturday afternoon and will take on the Senators Monday night.

Wheeler hasn't been ruled out to play in the game. The Jets hope to have their top-point producer in their line up against the Senators. He leads the team with 32 points, 9 goals and 23 assists.

The Jets are already without top defenceman Dustin Byfuglien and Zach Bogosian.
