Home renovations for Hudson.

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is almost done work on Journey to Churchill.

The project will be open to visitors this summer but harsh weather conditions caused some delays.

Construction workers kept busy through the frigid winter, and now the zoo is putting the final touches on the project that will bring the far north to your neighbourhood.

When the $90 million dollar facility is complete, it will feature three areas to house between 8 and 12 polar bears.

The Churchill Coast Exhibit is the largest area. It will represent the polar bears’ habitat in the fall.

The Sea-Ice Passage is an underwater tunnel where visitors can watch polar bears and seals swim by them.

In the wintertime, the open water will start to ice over, and guests can see how the animals swim when the water freezes.

Finally, the Wapusk Lowlands area will exhibit a summer-time polar bear habitat.

Inside the pool area, guests can look up to see the northern lights in the Aurora Borealis Room, before heading to one of many underwater windows to watch the bears.

The Journey to Churchill exhibit will also house four seals, snowy owls, arctic foxes and twelve caribou.

There’s no set date when the facility will be complete, but that information will be finalized in a few weeks’ time.
