Winnipeg City Council has voted to approve a controversial proposal that would add a fee to new homes to pay for related infrastructure.

Council approved the fees 10 to six in a vote Wednesday.

This comes after last minute deals were made to shore up support for the proposal.

The plan would see a $9,000 fee added to average new homes in sprawling suburbs to pay for related roads and services. The charges begin in May.

The gallery inside the chamber was full Wednesday, as councillors geared up for the final vote.

At least one councillor changed his vote because of some minor last minute amendments. Transcona's Russ Wyatt, normally in opposition to many of the Mayor Brian Bowman’s endeavors, said he is now on-board with growth fees.

Meanwhile, in an attempt to stop the new charges, the development community said it would take the city to court.
