RCMP said a woman who was a postal worker is facing fraud charges for incidents in 2009 and 2010 in Leaf Rapids.

RCMP said they were contacted in May 2010 by Canada Post and Employment and Income Assistance regarding “suspicious activity” at the post office in Leaf Rapids, northwest of Thompson, related to the handling of people’s income security cards and cheques.

Officers gathered evidence, which was forwarded to public prosecutions for consultation.

In November 2012, charges were recommended.

Police said the suspect is a former post mistress.

Geraldine Cockerill, 56, of Leaf Rapids faces 28 charges, including fraud under $5,000, forgery, theft from mail and uttering a forged document, said RCMP.

Cockerill is the current mayor of Leaf Rapids.
