The Winnipeg Police Service’s missing persons unit has been notified after emergency responders searched the Red River Tuesday morning for a male, but did not locate him.

The City of Winnipeg said just before 10 a.m., someone spotted a male in the water drifting north and later going under the ice.

It said the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service looked for the male for 90 minutes before terminating the search.

Winnipeg police don’t have enough information to link any specific missing person at this time.

The city said this time of year, the most hazardous waterways include: The floodway, ditches and culverts, and creeks and rivers.

“Parents and teachers are urged to speak to children and students about the dangers of waterways. The ice surfaces are thin and fragile, and falling into ice-cold water can be deadly,” said the city in a statement emailed to CTV News.

The city said the Fire Paramedic Service responds to an average of 200 water and ice safety calls each year, and advises people to check ice thickness before venturing on to it.

To drive a truck onto waterway, ice should be about 27 cm. A car - 22 cm. One snowmobile - 12 cm. Ice fishing - 10 cm, or a cross-country skier - 7 cm.
