A 44-year-old man arrested on August 9 died days after police used force during his arrest, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said.

The IIU said it was notified by the Winnipeg Police Service that “officers had used force in the course of arresting the individual,” in a release on Thursday.

Investigators said the man complained of sore ribs shortly after his arrest, and was taken to hospital by officers where he was medically cleared and transported to Winnipeg Remand Centre.

IIU said the man was taken to hospital once again on August 11 and died on August 13.

Prior to his death police said the man was charged with multiple weapon related charges as well assaulting an officer and unauthorized possession of prohibited firearm.

The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty. They said they have since taken over the investigation because a death has occurred.
