A 63-year-old man died Tuesday after a tree fell on him while he slept in a tent in Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario.

OPP responded to an emergency call in the park, located about 350 km southeast of Kenora, on July 22 at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Officers responded with assistance from a helicopter from the natural resources office.

A group of canoers had been camping at Point Lake when a storm passed through the area, causing a large part of a tree to fall, hitting the man while he slept in the tent.

Other members of his group tried lifesaving efforts, which were unsuccessful.

OPP said Charles Emerson Showalter, 63, of Wheeling, West Virginia died from injuries after the tree fell on him.
