A man who witnessed his truck being stolen managed to get into the back and call police, said Dauphin RCMP.

Around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, RCMP received a report of a stolen truck from a home on 4th Avenue S.E. in Dauphin.

Police said the owner of the truck was working in the yard when he heard the truck start up and saw a woman behind the wheel. Officers said the man then jumped in the box of the truck and called 911.

The truck crashed a short distance from where it was stolen, and extensive damage was done to the truck and the pole, said police.

Neither the woman nor the man was injured.

RCMP said officers arrived on scene and arrested a heavily intoxicated woman for theft and impaired driving.

Samantha Jessica Chartrand, 30, of Dauphin, has been charged with a number of criminal offences including theft of motor vehicle, impaired driving and refusing to provide a breath sample, said RCMP.
