Manitoba is planning to increase at least one of the penalties for talking and texting while driving.

CTV has learned the Selinger government will introduce changes to the law as early as Thursday, to hike the number of demerits for those guilty of distracted driving.

Currently, drivers face two demerits and a $200 fine.

Winnipeg police numbers show too many drivers are still disobeying the law.

In 2014 5,136 tickets were issued. More than 2,800 have been handed out so far in 2015.

Ontario just passed a law that would see three demerits and a maximum $1,000 fine.

The new Manitoba law is also expected to address a gap with the licence suspension process for impaired drivers.
