WINNIPEG - Manitoba Opposition Leader Brian Pallister is demanding an apology from the NDP government after one New Democrat referenced Pallister's wife in a media interview.

Pallister says it's unfair to go after the spouses or children of political opponents.

The Progressive Conservative leader is upset with backbencher Tom Nevakshonoff, who was quoted in a weekly newspaper as saying Pallister would like to cut funding for roads.

According to the newspaper, Nevakshonoff said Pallister might spare road work in the Interlake region because his wife is from the area.

Pallister raised the issue in question period, and Premier Greg Selinger said he hadn't seen the report but would look into it.

The premier's press secretary, Matt Williamson, said in a written statement that Nevakshonoff was not targeting Pallister's wife.
