Heading east or heading west, it doesn't seem to matter to which way drivers in the Polo Park area are going, many say the streets are some of the worst roads to travel on in Manitoba.

But it might not be the worst.

CAA captured its members' opinions in a poll for the worst-road award.

And for the fourth year in a row, St. James Street near the Polo Park mall was near the top of the list, with Empress and Ness right behind.

"I can agree with that. Yes, the roads are terrible, I drive them every day and they've done a number on the front end of my car," said driver Judy Algurie.

Algurie dislikes the roads so much she made a point of voting in CAA's annual worst roads campaign.

Todd Mckay had his pick for number one worst road: "St. James, St. James and St. James," he said.

More than 6,000 CAA members voted in the survey.

But St. James wasn't voted the worst road in Manitoba.

The top-10 list includes six Winnipeg streets and roads in Gilbert Plains, Deloraine and Winkler.

The absolute worst one, voters said, is Provincial Road 280 near Gillam.

Drivers there said you have no choice but to drive slowly to get through stretches of the highway.

"Can only go 40 kilometers an hour over this stuff. Absolutely brutal," said one driver, who submitted a video of PR 280 to CAA as evidence of its condition.

CAA said its concerns like that which prompted the top-10 list.

"What we wanted to do was have Manitobans speak about their concerns of the roads. And I'm not just talking about the potholes but the structure, crumbling roads, the congestion, the poor traffic light synchronization, safety issues on the road," said Mike Mager, president and CEO of CAA.

Mager said what's encouraging is the provincial and municipal governments seem to be paying attention.

No Brandon streets are on the list this year, noted Mager. Victoria Avenue there was number one on the list two years ago.

"Manitoba, as you've heard numerous times, has made a commitment of $5.5 billion to a five-year plan to build a stronger Manitoba focused and core infrastructure," said Ron Kostyshyn, infrastructure and transportation minister.

CAA said it believes the top-10 list and drivers' votes are making a difference on our roads, even though progress is moving slowly.

Both CAA and the province said to build better roadways, the federal government needs to get more involved and help fund infrastructure projects in Manitoba.
