Manitoba’s acting chief medical examiner has called an inquest into the shooting death of a man during a confrontation with police last November.

The inquest, announced Tuesday, was called in accordance with Manitoba’s Fatalities Inquiries Act. It aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and what could be done, if anything, to prevent similar deaths.

Mark Dicesare, 24, was killed on Nov. 6, 2015 following a police pursuit. Police were dispatched for calls of a man driving his vehicle near the Kapyong Barracks and pointing a gun at people.

The province said Tuesday Dicesare was shot by police during the confrontation. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner’s office performed an autopsy. The province said the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was homicide.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is also investigating Dicesare’s death. The IIU said in April the investigation was nearing completion, but noted the case is its most complex.
