Lloyd Axworthy said he's disappointed with how the province has handled the Port of Churchill in the last year.

Two weeks ago, Axworthy resigned as chairman of a provincial agency in charge of marketing the northern hub.

"Frankly I feel strongly about Churchill and it's been put in limbo for close to a year," said Axworthy.

The former MLA and federal cabinet minister has worked with a federal and provincial agency marketing the Port of Churchill for 30 years.

Last year the group was changed from a federal-provincial agency to a solely provincial one.

Axworthy said that since the province has taken over, it has missed some important economic opportunities.

"Churchill was really one of the keystones for Manitoba -- very disappointing, very sad,” he said.

Axworthy said there is a growing global interest in Canada's northern transport routes that is being untapped.

He added that plans to upgrade the port are currently on hold.
