A Winnipeg family bought a home a few years ago and everything seemed until just over a week ago when the ceiling fell right before their eyes.

Kazi Rahman's family just managed to get out of the way.

“The whole ceiling kind of just fell,” said Farzana Meem.

It happened in the family’s Fort Richmond living room while 15-year-old Farzana was doing homework and 11-year-old Farhana was playing on the couch.

“It was dust everywhere - in our noses, everywhere,” said Farzana.

When the dust settled, Kazi Rahman took a closer look at the drywall and said it appeared only small nails had been used to attach it to the ceiling.

The insurance policy the family had bought won’t cover the damages, said the family. The drywall work had been done years before the family bought the home.

The family worries the ceilings in other rooms in the house could also collapse.

“We are scared,” said Parvina Piash.

Every ceiling in their home could need to be repaired.

A home inspection company that spoke to CTV News said that unless the ceiling was sagging, it likely wouldn’t be detected until it’s too late.

A drywall company told CTV News that when problems develop, it’s typically only a small portion of the drywall.

After the story aired on CTV News on Sept. 22, offers of help started coming in.

A general contractor, painter and drywall contractor made contact with CTV and the family and are offering to waive labour costs for their work.
