Winnipeg firefighters worked to combat a roof fire at Bernie Wolfe School in Winnipeg in the River East Transcona School Division on Thursday.

Crews responded to the location at 95 Bournais Dr. for a report of smoke around 4:30 p.m.

Roofers had been working at the school at the time.

Firefighters had to tear up some roof tiles to get at the fire and were concerned about potential water damage to a classroom.

Late Thursday afternoon, there was no word on whether it would affect the first day of school on Sept. 3.

The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.
