A wreath was laid at the memorial in front of the RCMP’s “D” Division headquarters in Winnipeg for fallen Alberta officer Const. David Wynn.

Manitoba Mounties were joined by officers from the Winnipeg Police Service and members of the public Monday afternoon for a tribute to Const. Wynn.

“It’s our way of saying, we remember. We sympathize with the families and we’re going to carry on, one member short, but we’re going to carry on,” said Manitoba RCMP Const. Paul Human.

A full regimental funeral for Const. Wynn also took place Monday in St. Albert, Alta.

He died from injuries after he and auxiliary Const. Derek Bond were shot earlier this month in a casino in St. Albert by Shawn Rehn, a man they were trying to apprehend while investigating a stolen truck.

Wynn, who was 42, was born in Newcastle, N.B. and leaves a wife and three sons.

Officers from many different police forces took part in a procession to the church in St. Albert prior to the funeral.

A social media campaign started by Krysta Erickson of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, encouraged Canadians to wear red on Monday as a show of support for Wynn’s family.

Many Canadians responded to the call and shared photos online.

Lesley Ritchie’s husband is a retired member of the RCMP. She said she wore red “out of respect.”

“It’s just a very, very sad situation to bring everybody together. My husband survived the RCMP for 34 years and it’s just in honour,” Ritchie said.

Retired RCMP officer Murray McNeill of Winnipeg also chose to wear red.

“I can’t think of a better way to deal with it than to wear red,” McNeill said from his Winnipeg home.

At “D” Division headquarters, the RCMP started a book of condolences, which will be sent on Tuesday morning to Wynn’s family.
