Mervin Dueck wants answers after his son drowned in St. Malo Provincial Park earlier in August.

Dueck’s concerns about weeds in the water sparked the province to investigate on Tuesday.

Calvin Dueck was a healthy, athletic 19-year-old man when he drowned on Aug. 9.

His dad said Calvin was a good swimmer and with a friend who is a lifeguard when he died.

Mervin Dueck said friends saw him struggling in the water about five feet from an area shallow enough to stand, and they tried to help him out.

He said RCMP told him they were investigating seaweed entanglement.

He said several people have contacted him since Calvin's death about their concerns with the weeds as well.

Dueck is glad the province investigated but hopes it doesn't end here. He said nothing can replace his son, but he wants to make sure this doesn't happen to others.

The province said it last harvested weeds on July 25 from the area.

Dueck feels weed control should happen more frequently.

The family is also planning a tribute to the memory of its loved one.

Calvin played baseball with the Altona Bisons.

His dad Mervin said he was the top catcher of his age in Manitoba but it was his character and sportsmanship that people remember most.

The Duecks plan to make a batting cage in Calvin's name.

Donations can be made to the Rosenort Community Centre.

The province investigated the weed growth at St. Malo on Aug. 19.

Crews assessed weeds in the water after a call to the provincial minister to do so.

On Tuesday, crews harvested some plants from the bottom as they do every month and said the amount they took out is similar to the amount they always harvest.

Don Hallett, regional park operations supervisor - East Region, said they found no causes of concern.

The RCMP investigation continues.
