Winnipeg’s finance chair says the police service should have disclosed its purchase of the armoured car.

Last year several councillors were caught off guard when it was revealed police paid $343,000 for the new vehicle.

Marty Morantz says the service classified the acquisition as an operational expense which wouldn’t require approval from city council. Morantz has a different take on the purchase.

“Within the department they made that assessment, It’s not an assessment I agree with,” said Morantz

He says police should have included the armoured vehicle as part of the capital budget voted on by City Council.

Morantz says he’s not being critical, he just wants this to be the practice going forward when buying large capital assests within all departments.
