The father of a 6 year old girl who died in a school shooting two years ago is releasing his musical tribute to the life of his daughter.

Saxophonist and former University of Manitoba jazz instructor Jimmy Greene recorded the album Beautiful Life in memory of his daughter, Ana Marquez-Greene. She died along with 19 other children and six adults when a man opened fire inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in 2012.

In a Facebook post announcing the album’s impending release, Greene’s wife Nelba Marquez-Greene said she and her husband had very different ways of grieving.

“I wanted to fight. I went to Washington. I shouted, I screamed, I wrote, I challenged. It was and is an external process for me,” she said. “My husband, on the other hand, locked himself in my daughter's room. On many days, his muffled heart wrenching sobs were still audible on the other side of the door.”

While he was locked in his daughters’ room, however, Marquez-Greene said he began to compose the songs that would go on the album.

Several musicians, including classmates of Ana’s from Winnipeg, contributed to the recording.

The album will be released on Amazon and iTunes on Monday. Partial proceeds will go to support the Ana Grace Project and the Artist Collective of Hartford.
