Manitoba Public Insurance says Fridays leading into long weekends are the deadliest on record.

MPI says nearly 40 per cent of all holiday long weekend road deaths and injuries occur on the Friday.

The Crown corporation says, on average, one person is killed and more than 30 are injured on the Friday leading into a three-day holiday weekend.

MPI says road safety should be a priority, because of higher-than-normal traffic volume on the roadways.

"It tells us that people are in a rush on Fridays,” said MPI spokesperson Brian Smiley. “Traffic volumes are higher, so if there are mistakes on the roadways, sometimes, they’re not very forgiving mistakes."

MPI says Sunday and Monday have the smallest proportion of victims per day, according to information collected between 2008 and 2012.
