With Grey Cup parties kicking into high gear, one Winnipeg group wants to protect vulnerable sex trade workers.

Volunteers with the Bear Clan met at the bell tower on Selkirk Avenue tonight before making their normal rounds in the neighbourhood. This weekend, they'll be paying special attention to areas with sex workers.

Bear Clan volunteers want to make sure the women feel safe and johns know that someone is watching.

"There's going to be a lot of alcohol-fueled men coming down here, and they're transient because we have 20 or 30,000 guests, they're saying, coming in to town,” said James Favel. “So there's going to be a large population of transient men under the influence of alcohol."

Favel says the group reports suspicious license plates to police and police have visited homes associated with the plates.
