A memorial was held Monday for Canadians who gave their lives during the Korean War.

A service was held at Brookside cemetery to lay candles at the Korean war monument.

The Korean War ended with a ceasefire in 1953.

Over 500 Canadians lost their lives.

Unit 17 of the Korea Veterans Association hosted the ceremony.

Among those who attended, a member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, injured in the battle of Kapyong.

“We were the first ones hit,” said warrant officer Ron Shephard. “We had the highest casualty rate in the battalion at that time. Out of 26 men, there was four killed and 10 for sure were wounded."

The service also invited members of Manitoba’s Korean community.
