The longest-serving member of the Manitoba legislature says he is not done with politics, and is not ruling out another bid for the leadership of the NDP.

Steve Ashton represented the Thompson constituency for 35 years until he was defeated by a Progressive Conservative opponent in the April 19th provincial election.

Ashton, who is 60, says he wants to help the NDP rebuild from its election loss, and will remain active in the party in one way or another.

Ashton has run twice for the NDP leadership without success, and is not dismissing the possibility he might run again in a race expected next spring to replace outgoing premier Greg Selinger.

His daughter, Niki Ashton, is a member of Parliament who ran for the federal NDP leadership in 2012 and is being touted by some as a potential candidate to succeed Tom Mulcair.
