The northern Manitoba community of Moose Lake is in mourning following a deadly car crash that killed three people and orphaned four children.

Two men and one woman died after a southbound SUV and northbound car collided head-on on Provincial Road 384 near Moose Lake on Friday.

The crash left four children – two girls and two boys – without parents.

Mosakahiken Cree Nation Chief Jim Tobacco said the crash has deeply affected people in the community.“Obviously when you get this type of tragic accident, the community as small as Moose Lake, everyone is impacted,” he said.

Of five people inside the car, three of them died at the scene – the driver, a 41-year-old Moose Lake man, a 51-year-old woman from Moose Lake and a 37-year-old man from Opaskwayak Cree Nation. Two women from Moose Lake, ages 42 and 34, went to hospital with unknown injuries.

A 47-year-old man driving the SUV, along with a four-year-old boy and two-year-old girl, all from Moose Lake, went to hospital with undetermined injuries.

Tobacco said the four-year-old boy is expected to survive.

Family members of the victims held a vigil Saturday night. Tobacco said the community needs to remain supportive of the family and move forward.
