They're a minority around the city council table and their numbers have little chance of growing after the October election in Winnipeg.

Only nine of the 57 candidates running for mayor or councillor spots are women.

Fort Rouge councillor Jenny Gerbasi has been at city hall for 16 years.

She said many women feel intimidated to run for Winnipeg civic office because it is a male-dominated place.

Gerbasi said it might be hard to attract women to city hall because of what she describes as a disrespectful atmosphere that exists and it can be tough for mothers to balance children and a politician’s schedule, said Gerbasi.

The veteran councillor says it's important to mentor women who have an interest in running for political office in order to get more in the game.
