Police say two people who were in the car with a U.S. airman when he drove to a North Dakota Walmart and opened fire on people inside the store had no idea what was happening.

Grand Forks Police Lt. Derik Zimmel says the two people stayed in the car when 21-year-old Marcell Willis went inside and fatally shot one worker and injured another before killing himself.

Police say 70-year-old Gregory Weiland was killed and 47-year-old Lisa Braun was injured in the shooting, which happened about 1 a.m. Sunday.

Zimmel says Willis made up a story about why he needed to stop at the store. He says the two people in the car were "as clueless to his motives as anybody else."

Zimmel says the passengers are considered witnesses and not suspects.
